Map of Osmice | Where to go

If you’re on the hunt for some tasty home-made food and wine, and an unforgettable atmosphere, you should definitely visit one of the many ‘osmice‘ that take place throughout most of the year in the south-western part of Slovenia. I just love them!

Take a look at the map of osmice below and find one with a specific time-frame.

      About osmice
The 200-year-old Slovenian tradition of osmice (roughly translated as ‘eights’) originated in the Karst region during the period of the Habsburg monarchy when wine-growing farmers were given the chance to sell their surplus wine, home-made cured ‘pršut’ ham, and other dried meats, without paying tax for eight consecutive days per year.

Nowadays, osmice are usually organised twice a year, for a period of 10 days, and offer exclusively home-made delicacies, produced on a farm. These include cured meats, bread, cheese soaked in olive oil, various types of sausages, stews, štruklji dumplings, fruit juices, wines, and liqueurs.

While it’s sometimes quite hard to find these establishments, which are scattered around the Slovenian Karst, the Vipava Valley, Goriska and the Primorska region, you will know that you’re on the right way once you locate the wooden signposts and ivy sprigs that are fixed along the roads and at crossroads. I should also add that osmice are not only found in Slovenia. Some of them also open their doors across the border in Italy where you’ll be hosted by members of the Slovene minority that live there.

I hope that you’ll enjoy your osmica experiences. Meanwhile, I’ll do my best to visit every single one of them so that Wine Dine Slovenia will keep you happy with updates and photos!
